Mahindra & Mahindra, the country’s largest utility vehicle maker, and now become one of the most versatile auto makers in the country, is planning to launch a 1,000 cc small car in the Indian market. According to recent media reports, the company has chosen a site in Tamil Nadu to set-up a manufacturing plant with an investment of Rs 800 crore.
The new M & M small car will be launched in the price segment of Sub Rs 3 lakh, where it would have to fight for space with some well established car models like Maruti Wagon R & A-Star, Hyundai Santro Xing and Chevrolet Spark.
Earlier, the company had indicated that it will be launching two small cars in the country including a smaller version of its Verito sedan and an all new small car. According to industry sources, the company has already shared a proto-type with its four primary vendors.
The small car project, which has been codenamed as BRL, is supposed to result in a small car which is expected to be carrying a segment leading fuel economy and will possibly hit the Indian roads by year 2013-14.
