As decided originally, Mahindra & Mahindra has launched its electric vehicle e2o a few weeks after the Union Budget 2013. This is the first major launch since Mahindra took over the Reva three years ago. At the launch of the e2o in Delhi on 18th March, company chairman Anand Mahindra said, “The launch of the Mahindra e2o marks an important milestone for the Mahindra Group. This is not just about selling a car, it is about telling people to change their lifestyle. We are working at creating an ecosystem that includes mobility solutions along with other environment-friendly innovations.”

The reason for the Mahindra Reva e2o to be launched close to the Union Budget was because there were expectations of getting subsidy cuts for the electric vehicle. However, no cuts were implemented by the Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. The starting price of the e2o is Rs. 5.96 lakhs, which is 15-20 per cent higher than premium hatchbacks such as Maruti Swift and Hyundai i20. Mahindra Reva e20 comes with several interesting features. It is powered by new generation Lithium ion batteries and with a three phase induction electrical motor. It gets emergency remote charge through mobile phone application, GPS Navigation, regenerative braking and keyless entry. Interestingly, the braking technology gives power to the car's batteries by capturing the energy that is usually lost. Interestingly, the model has been provided with an automatic gearbox.

Batteries on the recently introduced Mahindra Reva e2o take 5 hours for a complete charge and once done, the model can cover a distance of 100 km. Charging can be done from any socket that provides a current of 15 amperes. The four seater e2o has a power of 48 bhp and can travel to a maximum speed of 105 kmph. Anand expects that Delhi would be the biggest market for the e2o, anticipating to sell 150-200 units a month here. In total, the company feels that an initial sale of 400-500 units a month would be a good number. The model is manufactured at Mahindra's plant of Mahindra in Bengaluru, which has an annual capacity of 30,000 units. Top management in the company is quite confident of the car doing well in the Indian market. In course of time, the e2o would be exported to European markets. For the future, Mahindra is also contemplating using electrical engines for two wheelers; however nothing is for sure as of now.
