The Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment is one of the most popular space in the Indian car market. Industry experts are of a view that domestic buyers are attracted to the kind of power an SUV exudes, along with its solidarity and road presence. An SUV is spacious, comfortable, safe and can accommodate a high number of passengers. The SUV segment has several sub-categories, such as compact, entry level and premium. There are several entry level utility vehicles available in the Indian car market, among which the most prominent are Tata Sumo Gold and Mahindra Bolero.

Solidly built and featuring masculine looks, both Tata Sumo Gold and Mahindra Bolero have powerful engines, which makes them fierce rivals. Mahindra & Mahindra, the leading utility vehicle maker in the country, is known for designing vehicles that are strong, masculine and are highly durable. It must be noted that these attributes are not confined to just heavy commercial vehicles but to passenger cars as well. Naturally, the Mahindra Bolero is a tough car that can withstand rough terrains and unfavourable weather conditions. Interestingly, both Mahindra Bolero and Tata Sumo Gold feature powerful air conditioning systems.

Mahindra Bolero ZLX is fitted with a DiCR diesel engine that has a displacement of 2523 cc. This engine generates an output of 58 bhp at 3200 rpm with a peak torque of 195 Nm at 1400-2200 rpm. On the other hand, the Tata Sumo Gold (BS-IV) is equipped with a 3.0-litre CR4 engine that churns out around 84 bhp at 3000 rpm and torque of up to 250 Nm at low 1000-2200 rpm. These figures clearly indicates that in terms of power, Tata Sumo is better than the Mahindra Bolero.

Many advanced technologies have been put to use in the manufacturing of the Mahindra Bolero ZLX. Presence of this unit ensures that there is a balance between power and fuel consumption. In addition, the engine produces low noise levels, harshness and vibration, which together ensures a peaceful drive. There is an Intelligent Driver Information System in the Bolero, which provides instant updates about things like fuel economy and distance to empty. Other features include the Voice Messaging System, Micro-Hybrid System and the engine immobiliser.

The Tata Sumo Gold has an excellent pick up that helps drivers to zip through crowded areas. One of the highlights of the Tata Sumo Gold is the double wishbone suspension featuring adjustable camber and toe for the improvement in dynamics and reduction in wear-tear. The anti-roll bar present in this vehicle ensures stability at high speeds by reducing body rolls.

Comfort is one of the key aspects for any consumer who wants to buy a Sports Utility Vehicle. Featuring ergonomic seats and a centre arm rest, the Mahindra Bolero provides great comfort to both driver and passengers. Tata Sumo Gold is quite spacious and has a lot of head, leg and shoulder room. Also, reduced pedal efforts and the light clutch make things relatively easy for the driver. Given what is on offer, there is little to choose between the Tata Sumo Gold and the Mahindra Bolero. On one hand, the Tata Sumo Gold is more powerful than the Mahindra Bolero. However, the Bolero trumps its Tata rival in terms of technology and comfort.
