To prepare itself ahead of 2020 emission norms, Mercedes-Benz has launched its first India-built BSVI engine. The new S-Class will be the first one to get it later this year and the new engine also makes the debut of the new series of inline six cylinder engines in India.
BSVI norms help reduce the particulate matter by 82 per cent along with a reduction in nitrous oxides by 68 per cent. But since the BSVI fuel will not be available across the country except for the metro cities before 2020, Mercedes has made sure that the new technology is BSIV fuel ready as well so as to allow a seamless transition of emissios norms.
The new engine has been certified under the new testing procedures which include real-world testing for the first time in Indian history along with laboratory based testing procedures for authenticity of emission numbers.
Also, the new inline six cylinder OM656 3.0-litre diesel engine is one of the most powerful diesel engines from Mercedes as of now. It pumps out 286bhp of power and 600Nm of torque and will power the new S350d. The 6.0-litre V12 petrol mill that powers the soon-to-be launched Maybach S650 has also been BSVI certified and will be seen at the Auto Expo 2018.
Speaking at the event, minister of Road and Transport, Nitin Gadkari, congratulated Mercedes-Benz for taking the first step forward while emphasizing on the importance of reducing emissions as early as possible with addition of bio-fuel powered as well as electric cars.
