BMW has showcased the latest generation 5 Series sedan for the Thai market at the 2017 Bangkok Motor Show. It was launched there at the end of February and is offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. This is the same car which will come to India later this year and replace the current model that has been on sale since 2014.

Externally, this new 5 Series (dubbed as generation G30) takes much of its design cues from the 7 Series. Noticeable elements include the kidney grille, LED headlamps and tail lamps and of course, that long, sporty silhouette that defines the model. The cabin is an evolution of the current car and gets the same layout but now with bigger screens and gesture control.

On the engine and gearbox front, the Thai market gets the car in the 520d and 530i guises. The former gets a 2.0-litre diesel while the 530i is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol producing 252bhp/350Nm. This version is only offered with the M Sport package for the Thai market.

In India, we will get this 5 Series across three models - the 520i, 520d and the 530d. We believe that each of these will be offered with a variety of customisation options from BMW’s many design packages. This list is also expected to include the performance oriented M Sport design option.

When launched in India, this new 5 Series will go up against the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF, Audi A6 and the Volvo S90. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 54 lakh to Rs 62 lakh, thus pitting it at the heart of the competition.
