      JLR mulls to enhance production of Land Rover vehicles in India

      Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata yesterday said that Tata owned British luxury brand Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is eyeing India as a prospective auto market for the company and hence it is looking forward to increase the number of Land Rover vehicles produced in the country, apart from planning to start manufacturing operations in world’s largest auto market, China.

      Tata addressed shareholders in annual report meet for 2010-11 and hinted on the forthcoming plans of assembling Land Rover in the country "Assembly operations in India have commenced for the Land Rover Freelander. Assembly of other Land Rover products are also under consideration," he said.

      He also spoke on proceedings over JLR’s operation in China and said that the company is thinking about localization and assembly of selected products in the Chinese auto market, which is considered as an important blooming market for JLR. The domestication of company vehicles will give immense thrust to the luxury marquee as company would be more potent than ever to price their products competitively.

      The ideal for many Indian business aspirants, Ratan Tata also said that a joint effort to build effective engine development programme is on priority list featuring Tata Motors and JLR. The programme is carried with a view to serve manufacturing factories in the India as well as in England.

      "To optimise the synergetic strengths between JLR and Tata Motors in India, an examination is also underway on a joint engine development program which would have manufacturing facilities both in the UK and India," he added.

      He further spoke on the fuel efficiency and emission norms and said that both the companies have extensive product development plans for cars, off-road vehicles and commercial vehicles powered by regular and alternative fuels. He explained that the companies are looking forward at developing electric and hybrid cars to combat the sky touching fuel prices and emission low norms.
