Tata Motors Chairman Ratan Tata has dismissed the possibility of Jaguar or Land Rover vehicles being manufactured in India in the near future. “India is still making it somewhat difficult for us to offer it,” which he said when asked about a possible timeline for Jaguar and Land Rover to be manufactured in the country. He also indicated the levy of certain taxes making it difficult to set up plants for the luxury marques.

The scale of manufacturing these luxury vehicles is not available in India, where currently 1,000 vehicles a year are being sold by Jaguar. A sales figure of at least four to five times this number would be required to justify the costs associated with investment, as per Ratan Tata. The Tata group is building a factory in China and Saudi Arabia for exports to different countries of the world. It feels India needs to lure more companies for investing in the auto market, as export businesses need a solid backup as well as continuous support.

Ratan Tata would be stepping down from his post as Chairman of the Tata group on 28th December. He would be replaced by the 44 year old Cyrus P. Mistry, son of Pallonji Mistry. Ratan Tata was responsible for making the “people's car”, the Tata Nano, into a reality.
