India ranks one among the top countries that have a high accident fatality rate. Making vehicles safer has been a top priority across the globe and this time around India has also been working around serious plans to implement regulations strictly. Bring out the issue, Pon Radhakrishnan, Road transport and highways minister has reportedly informed Rajya Sabha to mandate side and front impact crash test mandatory for passenger cars.
The government shall set-up front frontal crash test centers in Manesar and Pune by the end of this month. The test centers shall be set-up as part of National Automotive Testing and Research and Development Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) initiative. Speaking more on the occasion, Sugato Sen, Deputy Director-General, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, said in a telephonic interview to Bloomberg, “The auto industry has agreed to the crash test norms and we are waiting for the facilities to be ready. We’ve been informed that as soon as they are ready, the notification for mandatory crash testing will be issued.”
The regulations need to be met by all carmakers who are expected to use several safety devices, including air bags in the vehicle range being offered in the country. Commenting more on the occasion, Vishnu Mathur, SIAM's director general said, “Every country has its own safety requirements. Our cars are meeting the norms stipulated by the Indian government.”
