The government of India has flagged green signal to a special category of four-wheelers, named as 'quadricycles' to glide over the city roads within certain limits. Reportedly, quadricycles are much safer than the conventional auto rickshaws as it has completely enclosed body structure with four doors and a hard top. However, their engine capacity and maximum speed limit is much less than that of a small hatchback. A meeting with the Road Secretary Vijay Chhibber was conducted recently in order to solve the problem of amendment with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) for including quadricycle as a part of additional category vehicle, which will be registered and manufactured in the country.

Representatives from Ministry of Heavy Industry, iCAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology) and ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) marked their presence in the meeting. A official statement issued by the Road Ministry read, “A separate category has been proposed for notification to include quadricycle with specifications adopting present norms notified in the 3-wheeler category of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) or the European Union quadricycle, whichever is more stringent.”

It must be noted that this news has come as a delight for Bajaj Auto, which had showcased a quadricycle codenamed RE60 at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo. The vehicle has been assimilated with a 200 cc petrol engine, which clocks a top speed of 70 kmph. In order to offer this vehicle as a cost effective solution, the Bajaj RE60 delivers a fuel economy of 35 kmpl. Interestingly, all the quadricycles will be tagged with a badge “Q” on their body, which will distinguish them from other vehicles.

The Road Ministry has stated that the quadricycles will be asked for registration under commercial transport category for their inter city travelling within certain limits of municipal department. Also, these kind of vehicles will be only permitted to be driven by the licensed drivers after their registration. The statement further said, “It is expected to be a substantial upgrade over the 3-wheeler auto which currently provides for the last mile connectivity in most urban areas of the country.”
