      Indian auto market witnesses decline for 4 consecutive months

      The Indian automobile sector suffered drop in sales for the fourth successive month in May 2013. According to a statement by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), domestic auto industry recorded a decline of 4.08 per cent in vehicle sales last month, as compared to same year-ago period (May 2012). Further, the overall sales in the domestic auto sector dropped by 0.64 per cent between April and May months this year, over the corresponding period of 2012. SIAM's official statement was released on June 11, 2013.

      On the domestic sales and industry production during May this year, SIAM said in its statement “The industry produced 1,737,548 vehicles in May 2013 as against 1,811,515 in May 2012, decline of 4.08 percent over the same month last year. The overall domestic sales during April-May 2013 declined by 0.64 percent over the same period last year.”

      As per data revealed by SIAM, the total sales of passenger vehicles plunged by 8.56 per cent during April to May months this year, as against the same period of 2012. It must be noted that the passenger vehicle sales, comprising cars and vans, suffered a decline of 11.33 per cent and 10.88 per cent, respectively. In contrast to them, the Indian auto market saw sales of utility vehicles surging by 4.08 per cent during April and May months this year.

      Coming to commercial vehicles, this segment witnessed a decline of 5.2 per cent in its total sales during April-May 2013, over the same period last year. The Medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) and Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) segments recorded drop in sales of 12.11 per cent and 1.36 per cent, respectively.

      Regarding sales of two-wheelers and three-wheelers, the SIAM statement said, “Three-wheelers sales recorded marginal growth of 1.47 percent in April-May 2013 over the same period last year. Passenger carriers and goods carriers grew by 1.48 percent and 1.44 percent respectively in April-May 2013 over April-May 2012. Two-Wheelers registered marginal growth of 1.04 percent during April-May 2013 over April-May 2012. Within the Two-Wheelers mopeds and motorcycles declined by 11.45 percent and 1.38 percent respectively, while scooters grew by 13.88 percent in April-May 2013 over April-May 2012.”

      Further, the total automobile exports out of India declined by 8.62 per cent in April-May 2013. The export operations of passenger cars and two-wheelers were hit hard the most and suffered drop in numbers by 19.62 per cent and 16.5 per cent, respectively, as against the year-ago period.
