      India sees increase in car sales as FY 2011-12 comes to an end

      The leading auto manufacturers of India like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor and General Motors India have recorded impressive sales in March 2012. The companies witnessed this boom mainly because customers flocked to car showrooms ahead of the impending increase in prices, which will be effective from Financial Year 2012-13.

      Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest car maker, recorded the highest domestic sales ever at 1.13 lac units, showing growth of 2.08 per cent over the 1.10 lac units it sold in March 2011. Likewise, the sales of Hyundai Motor expanded by 22.9 per cent in the domestic market, as it rolled out 39,122 units in the third month of 2012 as compared to 31,822 units in corresponding period last year.

      Arvind Saxena, Director (Marketing and Sales), Hyundai Motor India, said, “We could meet our expectations in March as there was considerable interest to beat the expected price hike in the Union Budget. The market continues to pose many challenges and things can improve if interest rates come down this quarter.”

      General Motors India reported increase of sales by 12.8 per cent during March 2012 at 10,588 units from 9,391 units during the same tenure last year. The overall sales of Volkswagen also witnessed rise of 2.85 per cent, selling 8,326 units this time as compared to 8,095 units in the corresponding period last year. In addition, the Indian subsidiary of Nissan Motor marked its highest monthly sales ever with 5,880 vehicles from 2,101 units of same period in 2011. It posted an remarkable 180 per cent increase in sales on Year over Year (YoY) basis.

      On the other hand, American auto maker Ford faced a downfall of 13.9 per cent in domestic sales, as 9,026 Fords hit the road in March this year against 10,485 units in 2011. The total sales of passenger vehicles by Tata Motors in domestic market stood at 36,984 vehicles during the same period, which marked the company’s highest sales ever in a month. On the individual level, Tata Nano witnessed sales of 10,475 cars that made Tata Motors the third largest auto maker by sales in the Indian automobile sector. With these figures, the company recorded growth of 34 per cent, as 27,678 units were sold in the same period last year.

      In the month of March 2012, the passenger vehicle sales of Mahindra & Mahindra were 23,020 vehicles up from 17,320 units on YoY basis. Similarly, Honda Siel Cars India recorded substantial growth by reporting sales for March at 11,016 units, under review against 3,576 units for March 2011.

      Japanese auto maker Toyota Kirloskar Motor observed expansion of 87 per cent in car sales on YoY, amounting at 18,220 units for the month from 9,726 units in the same tenure last year. Likewise, German luxury car maker Audi reported brilliant sales for the first quarter of 2012 (January-March), as it sold 2269 vehicles in the Indian auto market. With this, the company recorded growth of 41 per cent when compared to 1611 units from the corresponding period in 2011.
