The electric and hybrid vehicle technology is gaining some traction in the country. To boost ‘Make in India’ initiative and also have more green vehicles on the road, India has reportedly formed a committee featuring automobile industry experts, executives and government officials who will monitor and coordinate the development of technology for manufacturing of the electric and hybrid vehicles.

Currently, the Mahindra’s Reva electric division manufactures electric cars in India. However, all vital components including the battery, motor and motor controllers are imported thereby creating problems for government programs towards Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME). Along with working out ways to set up charging infrastructure, the government has also rolled out various incentives to promote utilisation of green vehicles under the FAME scheme.
The move is expected to help vehicle manufacturers to roll out electric vehicles at affordable prices. The new committee will monitor the work of the Technology Platform for Electric Mobility (TPEM) which was set up under the Department of Heavy Industry and Ministry of Science and Technology to develop an indigenous technology.
