Hyundai has launched its Rs 20 lakh SUV, the Tucson, to sit between the Creta and the Santa Fe in India. However, the Tucson, even though available with petrol and diesel engine options mated to both manual and automatic gearboxes, is only being offered as a front wheel drive SUV. Come April 2017 though, and Hyundai will introduce a four -wheel-drive version of the new Tucson.

The company also has no plans for a 4WD option on the petrol version. The 4WD Tucson for India will mostly likely come with a diesel engine mated to an auto ‘box. And, it will be offered in the top of the line GLS trim. What’s more, the 4WD will offer even more features than the current GLS on sale in India. It will be powered by the same 2-litre, 185bhp diesel as on the Tucson GLS mated to a six-speed automatic. Internationally, the Tucson 4WD can also be had with a manual.

Meanwhile, the current car, priced between Rs 18.99 lakh and Rs 24.99 lakh doesn’t really have any competition barring to the Honda CR-V. The new Hyundai Tucson is offered in three variants - MT, GL AT and GLS AT. The petrol Tucson is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine generating 153bhp and 192Nm of torque, while the diesel comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel making 182bhp of power and 400Nm of peak torque. Both the engine are offered in six-speed manual and automatic transmission options.
