Hyundai India will launch a new sub-four metre SUV in 2019. Y K Koo, MD and CEO Hyundai India, said “Hyundai aims to launch an entry-level SUV in the first half of 2019. It will be positioned below the Creta and we will have four SUVs in our product range”. The Korean car maker had showcased the Carlino concept of a sub-four metre SUV in India at the Auto Expo 2016 earlier this year.

The new small SUV is expected to get proper SUV lines like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Ford Ecosport with about 200mm of ground clearance. The new SUV is expected to be based on the Grand i10 platform and will get both petrol and diesel engines.

The compact SUV will get the 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine that develops 81bhp of power at 6000rpm and 114Nm of torque at 4000rpm and should be offered with both the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic options. In case of the diesel engine, Hyundai might offer the 1.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine from the Elite i20. The 1.4-litre diesel develops 89bhp of power at 4000rpm and 220Nm of torque from 1500rpm and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The new small Hyundai SUV will take on the Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport. And given Hyundai’s late entry into this segment, not to mention the runaway success of the Brezza, expect Hyundai to undercut both the Maruti and the Ford SUVs with its new small SUV in terms of pricing.
