Hyundai India conducted extensive road tests of the i-Gen i20 in order to improve its engine performance. The 1.2 L Kappa petrol engine is supplemented with Variable Valve Timing (VTVT) technology in the new edition of the car and is capable of delivering maximum power of 83 hp against the previous model's 79 hp. On the other hand, the powerful engines used in the i20 diesel and automatic that produce 89 hp and 99 hp of peak power still find a place in the new car. The 1.4 L petrol motor with automatic transmission system present in the car delivers 136 Nm of torque, whereas the torque generation capacity of its 1.4 L U2 CRDi diesel unit is 220 Nm. The company has said that the manual petrol, automatic petrol and diesel variants offer ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) certified mileage of 18.5 kmpl, 15 kmpl and 21.9 kmpl, respectively.

Built on the successful Fluidic platform of Hyundai, i-Gen i20 features refreshed headlights, tail lamps and bumpers, along with a modified hood. The company has gotten rid of the F1-nose-like lines of the bonnet in order to incorporate simpler creases and has decreased the size of the hood as well. Other notable features of the car are all new eight spoke alloys, roof spoiler, glossy front grille and indicators located on Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVMs).

In order to give stiff competition to the likes of new Maruti Suzuki Swift, Nissan Micra, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia, Hyundai India has included a host of features that will set a precedent in the segment. Some of the features that the i-Gen i20 has borrowed from the Verna sedan are camera-assisted parking system, electro-chromic mirror with anti-glare function, heated electrically adjustable ORVMs, keyless entry. The company has also included automatic headlamps that illuminate under bad lighting conditions and rain-sensing wipers, which were present in the 2012 Fiat Linea.

For passengers' entertainment while driving, Hyundai India has integrated a premium 2-DIN CD/MP3 audio system with 4 speakers and 2 tweeters. This music system has USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity, while steering mounted audio and Bluetooth controls help drivers select their choice of music without ever taking their hands off the steering. Other highlighting features of i-Gen i20 are driver seat armrest, supervision cluster, clean air-cluster ioniser, one touch triple turn signal and leather clad steering wheel and gear shift knob. The car also has tilt and telescopic steering, 60:40 split seat with cushion pop-up for optimum passenger and luggage space utilisation.

A host of safety features ensure that the hatchback remains safe even under the worst circumstances. The car has all four disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), six airbags and clutch lock system that disallows accidental ignition of the engine. Along with these, the car also has a smart pedal system that empowers the brake pedal to disregard the operations of accelerator in instances of panicked braking.
