Hyundai, the South Korean auto maker, has been prominent in the Indian car market for a long time now. For about fifteen years now, Hyundai has been delivering superb quality cars, which have been appreciated by critics and buyers alike. The South Korean firm is the largest exporter of passenger cars in India, a position that it has acquired in a short span of time. There are several reasons why Hyundai is the second largest manufacturer in the passenger car segment behind Maruti Suzuki, the undisputed number one. Hyundai, over the years, has managed to create a brand name for itself, which is really important in a country like India. Notably, the 'i' series, comprising cars like i10, i20 and Grand i10, have performed remarkably well in the Indian auto market.

Even the Grand i10, which was launched recently, has found a liking among buyers, who have appreciated the hatchback for its stylish design, efficient engine and 'value for money' proportion. After the success of these models, reports have emerged, which suggest that Hyundai is planning to introduce the i45 in the Indian car market. Interestingly, there are only a handful of markets in the world, like Australia, Singapore and New Zealand, wherein the Sonata model is sold under the name of i45. This model has earned recognition throughout the global market, getting appreciation and accolades from critics all over the world. Industry experts have praised this model for its superior driveability, design, aerodynamics and comfort levels.

Sources have claimed that Hyundai would be targeting high end customers of the Indian car market by launching the i45. No confirmation has been or indication has been given by officials from the firm regarding the launch of i45 in India. However, there are strong rumours that i45 might be introduced in the country in coming times. Reports suggest that Hyundai might follow the same approach for this model as it did for the Grand i10. In India, the Grand i10 was launched alongside the existing version of i10. Seeing the response the new hatchback has got, analysts feel that Hyundai will be tempted to bring in i45 without discontinuing the existing Sonata model.

Hyundai, it can be safely said, has made an excellent comeback in the sedan segment. Initially, the Accent sedan, now a discontinued model, performed exceptionally well in the Indian market, thereby helping the South Korean auto maker to maintain a stronghold. However, Elantra was not able to achieve much success in the market and got an unfavourable response from customers and experts. The introduction of the fluidic design architecture triggered a tremendous response from the market. Hyundai launched Verna and Elantra sedans with the fluidic design and managed to record excellent sales figures. Analysts feel that i45 has a good chance of generating exceptional sales statistics due to its global acclaim. In addition, 'i' series has created a niche for itself, something that is likely to benefit this new model.

The global version of i45 comes in two engine options, both being petrol. One version of Hyundai i45 is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is capable of delivering maximum output of around 159 bhp along with top torque of 194 Nm at 4800 rpm. The other version runs on a 2.4-litre four-cylinder mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox with HIVEC adaptive logic technology. This engine produces a maximum output level of around 198.3 bhp and peak torque of 250 Nm. In terms of interiors, highlights of Hyundai i45 are supervision cluster, spacious, excellent infotainment system, Integrated Memory Seating (IMS), paddle shifters and electrically adjustable seats. The USP of this sedan is formed by its exteriors, which comprise integrated headlights and fog lights, electric folding side mirrors with indicator lights, panoramic sunroof and alloy wheels.

Many industry experts feel that the launch of i45 could be a game changing development in the Indian car market. When launched in India, it is going to compete against the likes of Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Jetta and Chevrolet Cruze. However, some experts also feel that if the i45 co-exists alongside Sonata, things might get a little tough for the latter.
