Honda May Re-Launch Civic Hybrid in India

Honda had discontinued its hybrid model for its popular sedan Civic earlier this year. The company had stated that the hybrid model will be made available to the customers only upon request. However, all this seem to change once again as the company contemplates its options once again to re-launch the car in the Indian market. Speaking on the sidelines of launch of its premium hatchback model Jazz, HSCI officials mentioned that the company may re-launch the car in India if the government slashes the import duty on the hybrid and eco-friendly cars in India.

Honda Siel Cars India imported the Civic Hybrid model in India as CBU. It attracted heavy import duty which made the car exorbitantly costlier. The 104 percent import made the car commercially unviable. Moreover, the excise duty and VAT further added to the on-road price. In the last two months of 2008, the company had slashed the prices of its hybrid model from Rs. 21 lakh to Rs. 13 lakh to clear the inventory. It had discontinued the model in India thereafter. Out of the total lot, company sold only 60 cars at its original price and the remaining 240 cars were sold at the reduced price of Rs. 13.6 lakh.
