In a bid to make its upcoming compact hatchback Brio highly price competitive, the Japanese Auto giant Honda is planning to offer expensive safety features as an option with the car. The move could be taken considering the high price sensitiveness of the Indian buyer of this segment. As per the industry reports, the company may launch the base variant of the car without an airbag, so that its price can be kept at a very competitive level. If applied, this will be a deviation from Honda’s global policy – Safety First – in the Indian auto market.

At present, advanced safety features like Airbags and ABS are standard in all portfolio models of the car in the country, but just the inclusion of airbags can enhance the cost the car between Rs 45,000-60,000, making it way more expensive than competitively priced rivals like Toyota Etios Liva, Chevrolet Beat and Maruti Swift.

Honda plans to launch the Brio model below the price segment of Rs 5 lakh, so that it can be made competitive in the market. The company however, is yet to reveal the feature and specification details of the car in the Indian auto market. Honda Brio will be the first ever small car in the India portfolio of the company as currently the premium hatchback Jazz is the cheapest Honda car in India.

In a recent statement, the company spokesman said, "Honda R&D is working closely with our purchase department to increase pure localization of components for the Brio."
