Both Honda Brio hatchback and City mid-size sedan models are established players in the Indian car market. In an interesting turn of events, the recently launched Honda Amaze has out sold Brio and City siblings in terms of sales in the domestic car market. For the month of April 2013, while 1628 units of the Brio and 1917 units of the City were sold, the new Amaze sold a whopping 4852 units.

In comparison to the Honda Amaze, the demand for both the Brio and the City has fallen. In March, 2916 units of the Brio and 3271 units of the City were delivered to customers. February 2013 also witnessed similar numbers, but things have certainly changed with the advent of the Amaze. However, the major difference here is that both hatchback Brio and sedan City still don't have diesel variants as compared to their rivals, while the Amaze has a 1.5 litre oil burner under its hood.

The Amaze is Honda's first compact sedan in India and also the first vehicle to have a diesel engine under its hood. Two engine options are available for this vehicle, one of which is 1.2 litre petrol motor while the other is a 1.5 litre diesel motor. Power outputs produced by the two engines are 87 bhp and 99 bhp, respectively. In its segment, the Amaze is posing stiff competition to the current market leader, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.

An entry level sedan is a great alternative for families that are looking for well designed vehicles that are bigger than hatchbacks, but not too expensive at the same time. In addition, with the availability of a diesel engine, the vehicle also helps in saving money over long run. Interestingly, the Amaze diesel is the most fuel efficient sedan in the country at present, generating an ARAI-certified mileage of 25.8 kmpl.

With respect to Honda models, once diesel variants of vehicles such as City, Brio and Jazz are launched, they would also sell in better numbers. However, petrol prices have been reduced by Rs. 3 recently, which could also result in a demand rise for such cars once again. The impressive Amaze sales also helped the company is recording a 20 per cent sales growth during April 2013. Therefore, the future of Honda’s diesel arsenal looks promising in terms of both sales and share in the Indian auto market, for the Japanese auto maker.
