A group of workers at Hyundai Motor India’s Chennai production facility went on a strike on October 30, 2012, which affected the manufacturing process of the company for more than an hour. According to a statement issued by the company, around 130 employees of Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU) participated in strike, backed by CITU, which eventually disrupted the production of 59 models. However, the statement further confirmed that “The production has resumed and factory is functioning normally.”
On a whole, the South Korean auto maker produces 2000 units a day with the help of its two production units based at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.
The company statement further said that its employees violated the agreed resolution of the Tripartite Committee, which was taken on December 9, 2010. “An injunction was also issued by the Judicial Magistrate, Sriperumbudur to HMIEU, restraining it from holding any strike, demonstration, unlawful activities within the factory premises and within 100 metre radius of the factory,” it said further.
According to United Union of Hyundai Employees (UUHE), the Hyundai India’s acknowledged non-political body, the company has around 1300 permanent employees against the total bandwidth of 2,007. Off late, UUHE has signed a mutual agreement with Hyundai Motors India stating that “the company is categorical that it will not recognise any other union.”
HMIEU was demanding to bring back 28 workers to pay roll who were discharged in 2008. However, the company statement mentioned no comments on the same.
