      GM to Enter Used Car Business in January

      General Motors is seeking its business expansion in India and looking for new avenues like used cars business. It plans to roll out its used car retail business on January 15 2009. The pre-owned car business will be branded as ‘Chevrolet OK’. The company will have 10 outlets initially across India including Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore and these retail outlets will deal only in GM cars. It will start its pilot test for Chevrolet OK next month and will assess the results for first six months. It shall plan its expansion plans thereafter.

      General Motors plans to provide used GM cars at its retail outlets that will be certified and guaranteed by Chevrolet. The cars will undergo 110 point check up and certification before being presented to the customer at any of the company’s used car retail outlets.

      The used car market in India has gone up by 30 percent and is still largely un-organized. The company plans to tap this market segment in the country. The company also plans to launch the CNG version of its sedan AVEO in June next year and LPG version of its small car spark in April 2009.

      GM India President and MD, Karl Slym, stated that the Indian operations of the company will not be affected due to the failure of the bailout package in the US. General Motors had been expecting $14 billion aid in the form of bailout package from the US government.
