      GM's new SMARTTECH engine to power Chevrolet Beat

      The Indian unit of US based leading car maker General Motors has announced on Friday that it will launch new 1.2-litre SMARTECH engine in the Indian market next month. The new generation SMARTTECH engine is a locally developed state-of art engine of GM India that will power company’s popular compact hatchback Chevrolet Beat.

      Speaking to the reporters on the occasion of the launch of new SMARTTECH engine in Thiruvananthpuram, General Motors India President and MD, Karl Slym said that company will roll-out a diesel version of the car in the Indian market by the end of this year.

      Further elaborating the new SMARTTECH engine, Mr. Slym said that 1.2L engine was created by the GM Technical Centre-India in Bangalore in co-operation with GM's new engine plant in Talegaon.

      The company’s Halol Plant at Gujarat currently has an installed capacity of 85,000 units is currently undergoing a capacity expansion and the company plans to take this capacity to 1,00,000 units per annum.

      "GM India has invested more than Rs 5,000 crores in India till now and is deeply committed to this market, to its customers and all its stakeholders," Mr. Slym added.

      In the year 2010, GM India has registered a jump of 60 per cent in its total sales as compared to 30 percent growth of the total automobile sector in India.
