General Motors is in advanced talks with Bangalore based Electric car maker Reva Electric Car Company to roll out electric variants of its small car Chevrolet Spark. The company intends to source the technology from Reva Electric Car Company or have a joint venture to bring out an electric model of Chevrolet Spark for the overseas market.

“We have been pursuing opportunities for commercial application of alternative fuel options, including bio-diesel, jatropha arrangement with CSMCRI (Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute), electric, fuel cell, hydrogen etc, with many parties for quite some time,” said GM India’s vice-president of corporate affairs, P Balendran. “Our efforts are ongoing and we have nothing to announce as of now. As soon as we finalize our plans for introduction of any alternative fuel solutions, we will announce the same,” he added.

GM India is wholly owned subsidiary of the American car maker General Motors. The project is currently awaiting a green signal from its headquarters in Detroit. Indian market is considered as an extremely important market for General Motors. The parent company has already acquired Indian operations under its umbrella. Developing electric vehicles in India for overseas markets is yet another example of General Motors’ attempts to stay put strongly in the Indian market.
