Despite losing its top position to Toyota in the US, General Motors in India reported 9 percent higher sales in the country. The company lost its title as world’s largest auto maker to Toyota Motors from Japan last year but it showed higher sales figures in India.

General Motors reported decline in overall sales in the past year but it gained considerable market share and marked increase in sales in emerging markets like India, China, Russia and Brazil. GM, now struggling to restructure under a $13.4 billion US government bailout, had held the title as the global auto industry leader for 77 years and used the line in marketing.

"We saw sales volume increases in the key four emerging markets of Brazil (up 10 percent), Russia (up 30 percent), India (up 9 percent), and China (up 6 percent)," stated an official statement from General Motors India.
