The Indian unit of US based leading car maker Ford Motors has stopped the production of one of its most popular India portfolio cars – the Ford Ikon – from the Indian market, as per a statement given by a top company official on Thursday.

The car was introduced in the Indian market way back in year 1999, and soon became one of the largest selling models of Ford India in the country. The car has been very popular among tourist operators.

Before this, the company had decided to not to produce the BS IV variant of the Ford in the Indian market. After that the car was available in only Tier II and III cities.

Ford India’s Managing Director Michael Boneham told reporters at the sidelines of a function in Chennai, "We have ceased production of Ikon." The company will not produce the model any longer at the Ford plant near Chennai.

The car was available in both petrol and diesel versions sporting a ROCAM and TDCi engine, respectively. The company had also introduce the CNG version of the car – Ikon Flair CNG – in the selected cities, last year.
