Ford Motors had launched its small car Ford Figo in the Indian market with extremely competitive price tag. The company has been unable to meet the demand and has stepped up its production at its Chennai facility. The overwhelming response from the domestic market and the encouraging one from overseas markets like South Africa has compelled Ford to start its second shift at its Maraimalainagar plant in Chennai since June.
"Figo is getting a good response from the market and the company has received 24,000 purchase orders in the first four months of launch. This small car is helping to drive our sales growth," said Ford India Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) Nigel E Wark.
The second shift will increase the production capacity by 30-40 percent and will enable the company to clear the backlog. Ford also intends to hire another 600-700 personnel at its manufacturing unit which includes executives as well as shop floor workers.
