Jaspal Bhatti, the popular Indian comedian and film director, has untimely demised when his car rammed into a tree in the early hours of October 25, 2012. The popular actor was on his way to Jalandhar from Bhatinda for the promotion of his next film.
Reportedly, the 57-year-old actor-director Bhatti, his son Jasraj Bhatti and Surili Gautam, were on a road trip for promotion of a movie, when the unfortunate accident took place at Shahkot in Nakodar area of district around 2.30 am in the morning. Further, Jasraj who was driving the car and Gautam, actress of Bhatti's upcoming movie - 'Power Cut', have been seriously injured in the accident. As per the doctors, Jasraj and Surili Gautam were stable but in a critical condition, and have been moved to a Ludhiana hospital for medical treatment.
Post the dreadful accident, injured occupants of the car were rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where the doctors pronounced Jaspal Bhatti to be 'brought dead'. Dr. Harpreet Singh said, "His body was brought to the hospital after 3 AM and after medical examination he was declared dead." The private hospital in Jalandhar was 150 km from state capital Chandigarh.
Jaspal Bhatti had been a national figure with his satirical takes on the usual problems faced by the common Indian man, on the immensely popular television shows, such as 'Ulta Pulta' and 'Flop Show.' The promotional tour of Bhatti's latest movie 'Power Cut' was slated to end in Jalandhar on the same day, which is loosely based on the frequent power cuts and related problems encountered by the local population of Punjab.
Bhatti was an avid family man and leaves behind his loving wife Savita, son Jasraj and daughter Raabiya. The satirical icon was born on March 3, 1955 in Amritsar and graduated from Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh as an electrical engineer. From people close to him it has been revealed that Bhatti gained popularity from his college days only, with his spoofs and caricatures mocking the corruption in Indian society. Bhatti worked as a cartoonist for The Tribune newspaper in Chandigarh, before trying his luck on the small screen. It is a great loss for the Indian entertainment fraternity.
