      2014 Auto Expo event was the venue where car fanatics cherished an opportunity to catch the first glimpse of Mahindra's much talked about XUV 500 Hybrid SUV. Pravin Shah, the chief executive (automotive division) said, “We are trying to build brand Mahindra globally. There will be a variety of vehicles under the electric platform. Various things we do surrounding one big activity that is in true sense a representative of our true DNA.” As seen at the event, the SUV was said to be the world's first diesel hybrid car.

      As per sources, the car is said to be 18% more efficient as compared to its regular version. Dr Pawan Goenka, executive director and president of automotive & farm equipment sector stated that the Hybrid version of XUV 500 falls under “Accessible technology” and the company has been working in developing sustainable mobility solution that encompasses alternative technology into research and development, and aid with commercialization plans. Exact date of launch for this Hybrid version has not been revealed by the Indian car-maker. Pricing for the car shall also be revealed at a later date. At the Auto Expo event, the car featured transparent acrylic body panels that aided visitors to gain a better insight on the technological development.

      The Hybrid version of XUV 500 is powered by Lithium ion battery as well as a diesel fuel type engine. The electric motor assists the diesel powered engine while accelerating and regenerative braking pattern is used to recharge the batteries as and when the brakes are applied. Technologically the car boasts of interesting advanced features like a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor. Its fuel economy rating is definitely on the positive side.

      The car on display at the event featured a transparent hood, whereas overall major design changes have not been implemented. The new hybrid SUV seems to be the only reliever from the ever increasing fuel prices in the country. From a technological perspective, this is a giant leap forward from the Indian car-maker. The Hybrid version is definitely welcome especially from Mahindra's hot-selling XUV line of SUV's. The launch date has not been revealed yet, details on the pricing and exact specification shall be known post an official launch by the car-maker.
