Electric vehicles will no longer be taxed in Maharashtra, as per a statement realised by the country’s Union minister Piyush Goyal. The union government has plans to make electric vehicles tax free beginning from BJP-ruled states like Maharashtra and then in other party-led states too. At the moment, only Mahindra Reva e2O is the only fully electric vehicle on the offering.
Mahindra is working towards adding more and more electric vehicles to its fleet, beginning with he electric versions of the Verito and the Maxximo. Adding on this, Dr Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra and Mahindra, stated "We are selling around 8 to 10 electric cars in Mumbai and other districts of Maharashtra. Across the country, the company sells 75 Reva cars a month. We can ramp up production of electric cars to 2,500 a month.”
The tax waiver for e-cars will be a boost for its sales and will help the state to reduce the levels of pollution as well. Other automakers are also working towards developing electric vehicles, but at the moment it is only Mahindra that has an advantage over the rest.
