A new electric hatchback concept has been developed by Mercedes-Benz. Presently dubbed as the EQ A, this EV car will compete with the BMW i3 and the upcoming Volkswagen ID when it goes into production.
This new Mercedes hatchback will be sold under the new EQ sub-brand that the company has created for electric vehicles. This has been done as the company plans to launch 10 new EVs by 2025. The EQ A will based on the MEA platform, so it’s a five-seater. While the company hasn’t teased this new vehicle in any form, it is expected that the EQ A will borrow design from the EQ SUV concept that was unveiled last year.
The German car manufacturer is positioning this as an entry-level EV and it will be their volume seller. So in order to keep costs low and price it well, the EQ A will be powered by a single electric motor that would send power to the front wheels. But rumour has it that there are chances of the EQ A getting a rear electric motor later on as well to make it an all-wheel drive.
The pricing of this Mercedes-Benz is expected to hover around £35,000 (Rs 29 lakh) and the launch scheduled for 2020. The EQ A, touted to be a competitor to the BMW i3, is one of the first few EVs to be developed by Mercedes. The carmaker has also filed for trademark of the EQ E and the EQ S.
