International bike maker Hyosung, which gets its products assembled and sold in India through Pune based firm DSK Motorwheels, is planning to take things up a notch by manufacturing bikes that will have a capacity of 125 cc and 150 cc, thereby competing with firms like Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp. Also, with the festive season coming up, the firm plans to increase sales by introducing offers and raising brand awareness among customers.

Hyosung, at present, is not that big a brand in the Indian market despite having pedigree in the international arena. Industry experts feel that the dynamics of the Indian market are different as compared to other country and factors like brand value, price and fuel economy are things that play a huge role. At present, the segment in which Hyosung operates, it will be tough for it to penetrate deep in the Indian market.

According to a report in BS Motoring, DSK Motorwheels has plans to enter the volume segment in collaboration with Hyosung. Shivpada Ray, Chief Operating Officer at DSK Motorwheels, said, "We are in the process of acquiring land for our plant, we already have around 85 acres in possession of the total 100 acre parcel. We plan to start production at this new facility by 2016, and once it comes onstream, we plan to get into manufacturing 125cc and 150cc bikes in India”.

The brand, in India, is known as DSK Hyosung and its portfolio contains bikes within a range of 250 – 650 cc. At present, the bikes are assembled at Wai in Maharashtra with an average rate of 12 units per day. Notably, DSK Motorwheels bought the motorcycle division of a firm called Garware Motors and the Wai assembly unit was a part of it.

Adding further about the future plans of the firm, Ray, said, "As for the bikes, we are planning to target the aspirational segment, and not the commuter segment. These would be stylised 150 cc bikes. Scooters are a longterm plan, as the segment shows significant potential. "Scooters are growing at around 30 per cent, and 125-150 cc segment is growing at around 12-13 per cent. Motorcycle market base is much larger.”
