Following a sharp increase in the price of petrol of Rs 3.14 by the central government, the Delhi government has now decided to increase the registration price of cars run on diesel by as much as 25 percent on the existing amount. This will directly result in a Rs 6,000 hike on the price of lower priced diesel cars and Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 hike for high-end luxury diesel cars in Delhi.

The National Capital accounts for the registration of around 1,200 to 1,400 vehicles per day, out of which diesel cars account for a share of 30 percent.

The diesel cars on which buyers were paying 4 percent registration duty, will now attract five percent on registration. On the other hand, the diesel cars on which buyers were paying 7 percent registration fee till now, will now account for a 8.25 percent registration fee. Moreover, the high end luxury cars run on diesel will now attract a registration fee of 12.5 percent as against the earlier rate of 10 percent.

The sales of diesel run cars have surged considerably in last few months with a continuous increase in the price of petrol. The price gap between petrol and diesel has now widened-up to Rs 25, as compared to a gap of just Rs 14 about a year back.
