Renault will launch its all-new SUV, the Captur next month and has opened the bookings for the same starting today. For Rs 25,000 you can book the Captur which will be positioned above the Duster and will compete with the Jeep Compass in the Indian car market.

Built on the B0 platform, the Captur is the first car to bring in the new Renault design language to India. The fascia is pasted with a horizontally slotted smiley grille with Renault’s diamond logo at the centre. The Captur gets curvy body-lines instead of the typical square SUV lines which gives it a distinct sporty look. The flared wheel arches and a rising hemline gives the roof a sloping coupe-ish effect. The top-spec car will come with full LED headlamps, C-shaped DRLs and LED tail lamps along with 17-inch diamond cut alloys.

On the inside, the Captur will be offered with the unique white and gold interior while the AC vents will get chrome inlays. The cabin will be upholstered in leather.  With a six-way electrically adjustable driver seat. It gets a 7-inch touchscreen display in the centre-console with smartphone integration via Bluetooth, voice command and GPS navigation. Automatic climate control is standard along with electrically operated wing mirrors, cruise control and steering mounted audio controls.

In terms of safety, the Renault Captur gets dual front airbags as standard along with ABS and EBD, brake assist, hill-start assist and electronic stability control. It also gets ISOFIX standard fitments for child seats. It will certainly get rear parking sensors for parking assist.

Under the hood, the Captur will be offered with the same engine options as the Duster. The 1.5-litre H4K petrol engine develops 105bhp of power and 142Nm of torque and comes mated to a five-speed gearbox. The 1.5-litre K9K diesel will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox to transfer the 109bhp of power and 240Nm of torque to the front wheels. While AWD is not being offered now, we are sure that the SUV will get this badge in due course of time. It will also get the CVT gearbox for the petrol and the AMT for the diesel in future.

The Renault Captur is a competitor to the Jeep Compass and it does match the American in terms of features and equipment. However, it loses out on power and the success of the Captur depends upon Renault’s pricing strategy. Renault has learnt from its Indian experience and has started building tailor-made products for the sub-continent and if we take a cue from the aggressive pricing of the Kwid, the Captur should become a force to reckon with.

The Renault Captur will also be offered with customisation packs to add a personal touch along with a whole bunch of specially-made accessories for the SUV. We expect Renault to sell the Captur at a starting price of about Rs 12 lakhs, ex-showroom, while the top-spec car will cost about Rs 18 lakhs.
