      Delhi Auto Expo 2012: Trends in the Automobile Industry

      The 11th edition of Delhi Auto Expo that commenced from 5th January and ended on 11th January was a huge success. The theme continued to be ‘Mobility for All’ with special emphasis on the environment friendly and green technologies. Over 50 new launches across segments like hatchback, small car, sedan, SUV and MUV were showcased. This year proved to be different with the unveiling of various hybrid cars, innovative technologies and mobility solutions.

      Around 1,500 participants from 24 countries were part of the exposition that brought latest and innovative automobiles at the event. However, the limelight was stolen by cars in the SUV as well as hybrid and electric car segment.

       

      Trends in the Automobile Industry
       

      In the sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment, manufacturers like Tata, Ford, Chevrolet, and Mahindra & Mahindra came forward with their Safari Storme, EcoSport, Captiva and XUV, respectively. This segment also saw the unveiling of various concept cars like Maruti Suzuki’s XA Alpha and Mahindra & Mahindra Ssangyong’s XIV-1. Luxury SUVs included Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Apart from these, Force One, Renault Duster, Toyota Fortuner and Volkswagen Touareg were also displayed.

      There was special focus on ‘eco-friendly’ vehicles at the exhibition. The alternative fuel segment included cars by Toyota, Chevrolet, Mahindra & Mahindra, Nissan and Tata. The range also included India’s very own Reva NXR an electric vehicle which is a four-seater. Tata revealed its electric version of the Indigo Manza and Toyota showcased its most popular Prius, the electric car. The Chevrolet stand introduced the Volt which is the first electric car to be mass produced. It also displayed the Beat BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and a two-seater EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle) concept. Other vehicles included Nissan Leaf EV (Electric Vehicle), Volkswagen’ XL 1 diesel hybrid concept and Peugeot’s 3008 hybrid. Volvo displayed a hybrid bus for public transportation and Hero MotoCorp, in the two-wheeler segment, revealed a hybrid scooter named Lead.

      The sedan segment was dominated by models like Hyundai’s Elantra and Sonata, both sporting the famous ‘fluidic design’, Peugeot’s luxury 508 sedan and BMW’s premium fifth-generation M5. Also seen were Skoda’s latest sedan Rapid, developed especially for the Indian buyers and Fiat’s brand new Linea in a beautiful new colour ‘Oceanic Blue’. The small car segment was crowded by Bajaj RE60, developed for public commuting, Tata’s LPG version of the Nano and Maruti Suzuki’s MR Wagon, Palette and Solio. The Hatchback segment included Chevrolet Sail, BMW’s Mini range, Renault Pulse and Fiat Punto.

      Delhi Auto Expo also witnessed the launch of India’s first supercar, DC Avanti, by the popular DC Design House. Students belonging to National Institute of Design and other institutes displayed innovative designs based on the ‘green mobility for India’ concept. BAJA SAEINDIA brought forward racing All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) developed by students.

      Pioneer India, the in-car entertainment solutions provider, showcased a host of interesting technologies like the MIXTRAX, HVT and SPL speakers. The Delphi Automotive came up with products and solutions based on the safe and green concept. At the Auto Expo, the two-wheeler segment also kept auto enthusiasts engrossed with a host of exciting brands like Triumph bikes, Ducati Monster Model, Harley Davidson, Yamaha, Royal Enfield and many more.
