Daimler, along with its Chinese partner BAIC Motor, is planning a whole new series of electric vehicles for China in the coming years. The brand, in fact, has announced its plan of upgrading the Mercedes-Benz factory in Beijing to build electric cars.
Both the companies have committed to produce a range of New Energy Vehicles – a term the Chinese government uses to designate plug-in EVs and hybrids. Daimler is also in the process of acquiring a minority stake in Beijing Electric Vehicle which is a subsidiary of the BAIC Group, in order to enrich their alliance on developing new energy vehicles.
Presently, the Beijing facility only makes conventionally powered Mercedes models. Soon, it plans to put up a separate line in the facility for the electric vehicles for Daimler which aims to launch over 10 new electric cars in China by 2022.
