According to several studies done by research organisations in Europe, diesel-powered cars have been heavily responsible for air pollution. The European market has been actively involved in promoting investment for diesel powered vehicles and this trend percolated to several countries across the world, including India.
In recent years, diesel cars have become really popular in the sub-continent, including the smaller car segments. Cars like Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Honda City, Toyota Fortuner and Ford EcoSport have done really well. Though surveys point out to the pollution caused by diesel cars, union from the automobile industry in the United Kingdom has come out to oppose the chain of thought.
An organisation, named Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), has said that diesel cars are facing unnecessary criticism. Officials from SMMT have stuck out their necks to claim that diesel cars are clean and manufacturers take all steps to ensure the same.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT, in an interview, said, “Today’s diesel engines are the cleanest ever, and the culmination of billions of pounds of investment by manufacturers to improve air quality ... The allegations against diesel cars made in recent months threaten to misguide policy making and undermine public confidence in diesel. It’s time to put the record straight.” Experts feel that it will not be long before this problem is faced by the Indian automobile industry and questions on the issue are being raised.
