It’s been an exciting day for Tata, who launched their newest car, the Tigor, in India today, at a price of Rs 4.7 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This Tiago-based sub-four metre sedan marks its entry into an already well-established compact sedan segment dominated by the likes Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, and Honda Amaze. The Tigor, however, has tried to undercut the competition using attractive pricing, and large boot space, courtesy of a unique body style. Here is a competition check on how the Tata Tigor fares against its competition.
Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire
The undisputed leader in the compact sedan segment has been the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. The Dzire clocks an average sale of more than 15,000 units every month. One of the strongest selling points for the Dzire is the massive boot space. However, with its ‘styleback’ boot, the Tigor at 419litres has more boot space than the Dzire’s 320litres. Though the Dzire is a tad bigger, the Tigor’s wheelbase is longer. Both the cars are equally matched in terms of the feature list, equipment and engine outputs. The Dzire, however, does offer an automatic transmission, but the Tigor too will be offering it later.
Hyundai Xcent
After the facelifted Grand i10, the sub-four-metre sedan is next in line to receive an update soon. As reported earlier, the new Xcent will get a re-designed rear, (Although the current doesn’t look too bad) with a sloping roofline and a stubby boot. The Xcent looks proportionate and has a large boot space, although smaller than the Tigor. Engine wise, the Xcent and the Tigor are evenly matched with respect to power figures but the Xcent has an optional automatic transmission that comes with its petrol variant. The Xcent’s interior is well appointed and comes with all bells and whistles including ABS and driver side airbag as standard.
Honda Amaze
Honda’s take on the sub-four-metre compact sedan received an update last year. The Amaze is well-proportioned and looks better with reworked fascia and rear, updated grille and tail lamps. Given that it’s a Honda, the Amaze is a lot more expensive compared to the Tigor. Dimensionally, the Tigor is a tad larger than the Amaze but it is also heavier. The Amaze has the bigger and powerful engine diesel engine, whereas the petrol one is also a potent and peppier unit with an optional CVT transmission. The Tigor, however, has a fresher design and also scores some brownie points for the larger boot space and the unique styling.
