The Renault Kwid was showcased as a concept at the 2014 Auto Show and surprisingly the car was up and ready for sale in 2016. The Kwid was successful in unsettling the A-segment and went on to become one of the most successful cars for Renault. We now have the Kwid 1.0-litre with an automated manual gearbox and it does compete with a bunch of cars. Here is how it fares.

      Hyundai Eon 1.0-litre

The Hyundai Eon 1.0-litre was built to compete with the Alto K10. While it made a mark in the beginning with its fluidic styling, it soon went out of fashion especially with the more options coming in. First it was the Datsun Go followed by the Renault Kwid and the Datsun RediGo. And then the Eon is priced almost Rs 22,000 more than the Kwid which also gets an AMT gearbox.

      Maruti Wagon R

The Maruti Wagon R is another bestseller from Maruti. Despite its average ride and unyielding gearbox, this tall-boy has been a favourite for its ease to drive and convenience. No matter what size of occupants you have, they will certainly fit in. The Wagon R has changed over time, albeit cosmetic only, and now gets an AMT option as well. When compared to the Kwid, it is a larger car and offers more space but misses out on features like touch-screen system and Bluetooth connectivity. And it comes at a premium of over Rs 50,000 over the Kwid, which is considerable for the A-segment.

      Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

The Maruti Alto is the undisputed king of the A-segment. The car sells in scores and that is not only because of the Maruti brand. It offers a good bang for the buck with a 1.0-litre engine and an AMT for an ex-showroom price of Rs 4.13 lakh, Delhi, about Rs 20,000 cheaper than the Kwid. But then, the Kwid also has a set of tricks up its sleeve. First up, it’s the look of an SUV and a taller stance which allows easy ingress and egress. Then you have the touch-screen music system with navigation. Add the generous amount of cabin space and you have a winner on the cards.

      Datsun Go

The Datsun Go started with a value proposition similar to the Kwid. It offered a larger car, more cabin space and all of that for a price well within budget. But then, the Datsun Go has been outdone by the Kwid. The Kwid not only offers what the Datsun does, but does it with it style. The Kwid also has the larger 1.0-litre engine with AMT gearbox in its arsenal and all of this at a price premium of only Rs 9,000 over the Datsun Go.

      Tata Tiago

The Tata Tiago is the most formidable competitor to the Renault Kwid if you can afford to extend your budget just a little bit. At Rs 4.6 lakh, you can avail the second-to-top trim of the Tiago Petrol, the XT. The Tiago is clearly from a segment above the Kwid but the aggressive pricing has made it possible for the Tata to get into the A-segment fray. Our team has liked the Tiago for what it offers and the Kwid certainly has a tough battle to win here.
