There are several options in the market when it comes to purchasing utility vehicles. However, with such intent, names of Tata Sumo gold, Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari strike the mind first. All these three vehicles have so far got good market response in the country and thus, it would be quite interesting to check these vehicles for features, price and other details.
The first vehicle to check is Tata Sumo Gold. This utility vehicle is available in the market at a retail price between Rs. 5.93 lakh and Rs. 7.54 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). It comes in two versions, namely Sumo Gold BS IV with a 2956 cc CR4 engine and Sumo Gold BS III with a 2956 cc engine. The CR4 diesel engine offers a power output of up to 84 bhp while the TCIC diesel engine is able to produce 69 bhp. This diesel engine has been mated with a five-speed manual gearbox. The BS IV version of Tata Sumo is able to return a fuel economy of up to 15.3 kmpl with less emissions. Coming on to its exteriors, this vehicle features a simple traditional classic design. This utility vehicle has a ground clearance of 182 mm that allows it to pave uneven surfaces with ease. It has a height of 1925 mm, width of 1700 mm and length of 4258 mm. Mahindra Scorpio is one of the best selling vehicles for its manufacturer. It is available at a retail price of Rs. 8.08 lakh and Rs. 12.75 lakh. In lie of a huge success of this vehicle, the auto maker recently introduced 500 units of the Scorpio Special Edition. Scorpio comes equipped with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine having a displacement of 2179 cc. This engine, incorporated with a CRDI (Common Rail Direct Injection) fuel supply system, is either mated to a five-speed manual transmission system or an automatic gearbox. It can generate a power of up to 120 bhp and peak torque of 290 Nm. This vehicle can easily clock a speed of 100 kmph in 15.6 seconds. It offers a mileage of up to 10.5 kmpl in city and 15.4 kmpl on highways. The automatic version offers a fuel efficiency of up to 9.6 kmpl in city and 13 kmpl on highways. With a ground clearance of 180 mm, the length, breadth and height of Scorpio is 4430 mm, 1817 mm and 1975 mm, respectively. Various safety features of this utility vehicle are ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), dual SRS airbag, crash protection crumple zone, child lock and high mounted stop lamp.
Tata Safari is available in the market with a retail price ranging between Rs. 8.77 lakh and Rs. 13.63 lakh. It is powered by a performance oriented 2.2-litre DOHC diesel engine that can generate a power output of up to 138.1 bhp. This vehicle offers a mileage of around 10.45 kmpl in city and 13.93 kmpl on highways. It can attain a speed of 100 kmph in 15-16 seconds, further clocking a top speed of around 156 kmph. The main highlight of this vehicle is its ground clearance of 205 mm that allows it to ride on most challenging terrains. Also, with respect to dimensions, its length is 4650 mm, 1918 mm width and 1925 mm height. Tata Safari boasts of safety features like dual front air bags, crumple zones, tilt-able and collapsible steering column, tubeless tyres, ABS with EBD, central locking system and child safety lock to ensure a safe journey.
