General Motors is planning to launch the new Chevrolet Volt electric car model with a great momentum in North America. The car is also known as EV2 which is slated for launch by late 2010 or early 2011. It is not a hybrid vehicle, but a pure EV. Volt relies solely on its battery and only uses the engine to extend the vehicle’s driving range which is quite different from a typical hybrid vehicle which uses battery just to supplement performance or deliver better fuel economy as its solely relies on its engine.

Chevrolet Volt belongs to segment of family hatchbacks with seating capacity for five people. It is reasonably attractive, comfortable and practical as well. General Motors intends to venture into hybrid and electric vehicle to compete with models like Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf. In India, it has already inked MoU with Reva Electric Car Company to produce electric model of Chevrolet Spark. The high-tech, Earth-friendly Volt could provide a bridgehead for GM in the US market.
