General Motors that launched the updated Sail and Sail U-VA, is now focusing on current lineup to increase its sales in the Indian market. It was speculated that the company would launch a sub-4 metre compact SUV in 2015; however the company has now changed its strategy for the Indian market. For the next two years, the maker would introduce facelifts and exciting offers on their existing products to remain stable in the highly competitive market.
At the 2014 Delhi Motor Show, the American automaker showcased a compact SUV concept- the Adra. The vehicle is expected to be launched in 2015-16, but the vehicle's launch is now shifted to 2017. Before this, the company would introduce the next-generation Beat hatchback and a compact sedan based on the Beat platform in 2016-17. The compact SUV Adra was designed by GM Indian designers, which is being developed at the company’s Indian technical centre.
The compact SUV would compete against the likes of Ford EcoSport and upcoming sub-4 metre SUVs from Honda, Nissan, Volkswagen, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors. Based on GM’s new Gamma 2 platform, the Adra is expected to get new generation ECOTEC turbocharged petrol engines and is equipped with several advanced features. The oil burner is likely to be the tried & tested Fiat’s 1.3-litre multi-jet unit that also powers the Sail twins and Chevrolet Enjoy.
