General Motors is planning to introduce an electric car model in India next year. The company has posted YoY growth of 76 percent and is quite optimistic about Indian market. The new car model will be economically priced apart from being mileage-efficient.

General Motors has already shaken hands with Chinese car maker SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) to produce electric cars for the global market. The India electric car will be manufactured with locally sourced components as well. Thus, the car will not bear a Chinese tag but will be a made-in-India tag.

“We have already sourced about $550M worth of components during the last two years,” said Karl Slym, CEO GM India. Components include basic metal parts from about 250 vendors in India of which 72 are meant for supply to both Indian as well as GM plants abroad. "For domestic operations, GM has sourced $356 million worth of components so far,” said Karl Slym further.

It is still not clear whether General Motors is planning to introduce Chevrolet Spark EV as initially planned with Reva Electric or a completely new Chevrolet Volt.

General Motors would also soon be commissioning the power train facility in Talegaon, making the first flexi-engine plant for GM globally wherein both petrol and diesel engines are going to be manufactured together.
