Chevrolet, the completely owned division of American auto maker General Motors, seems to be working on the development of a sub-4 metre version of its flagship Enjoy Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) for the Indian auto market. Industry experts are of a view that the auto maker is looking towards this move to reduce the price of its existing model, which has not strike perfect chords with the hearts of Indian buyers. However, it must be noted that the current excise benefits offered by the Indian government are provided to those cars, which measure less than 4 metres in length and have a diesel/petrol engine of less than 1500/1200 cc, respectively.
Sources close to the development process have stated that the diesel model of new Enjoy will be a great vehicle for the price sensitive Indian buyers. However, the petrol version of Enjoy could also fall in the duty relaxation of the excise department, if General Motors look forward to replace the 1.4 litre (102 bhp) engine of petrol variant with the 1.2 litre (85 bhp) powertrain, which is doing a good job in Sail. On this view, some of the auto experts have to say that there would be a significant fall in the power output of the model, but then the reduced weight of new Enjoy will offset the same.
The current generation model of Enjoy is 4305 mm in length, which is much more than the 4 metre scale of Indian government. This clearly means that the company engineers will have to work hard to smartly chop the extra 305 mm of the length. Coming to the pricing of the new model, the new sub-4 metre Enjoy is expected to be priced around Rs. 1 lakh less than the present generation model.
