The Maharashtra Transport department has proposed increasing the RTO registration charges for CBU motorcycles from the existing rate of 7 per cent to 20 per cent. Applicable on all imported motorcycles, this increase in registration charge will be directly reflected on the on-road price of the motorcycle and will have to be borne by the customer.

This increase in registration charges was supposed to be applicable fromApril 1, though the transport department is delaying it for a few more days. Manufacturers like Honda, Triumph and Kawasaki are continuing with the old price list of its imported bike range, though Ducati has already started charging customers according to 20 per cent registration charge. However, the Italian manufacturer is returning the surplus amount to the customers as soon as the registration process is complete and the RTO receipt is generated.

The increase in registration charges from 7 per cent to 20 per cent is sure to create a huge hole in the pockets of customers. To give you an idea, a Ducati Scrambler will cost Rs 1.5 lakh more than it did once the transport department passes the rule. So if you were planning to buy a CBU motorcycle anytime soon, we suggest you hurry.
