With rising awareness on the need to deliver safe cars has encouraged the Vehicle Regulation and Road safety authority of India to propose a bill on Road Transport and Safety. The draft is expected to give out pre-defined guidelines on standards for design and construction of passenger cars. The Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program is expected to begin sometime early next year. The vehicles would be tested based on front-on and side-on crash situations.

As of now, carmakers in India do not undergo any sort of new car assessment programme that provides buyers with independent reports on vehicle crash safety. The vehicle makers are also not required to meet United Nation’s basic crash-test standards which is mandatory in most of the markets across the world. Some of cars in the economy hatchback segment like Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, Hyundai i10 and Tata Nano are found to be unreliable and capable of causing grievous injuries to its occupants. The test reports have stated these cars as possessing “inadequate vehicle structures that collapsed to varying degrees.”

Post enforcement of new laws, the cars would be expected to feature stronger reinforced structures and may comply to international safety norms. It is also likely that safety equipments like Airbags may also come as a standard feature with the new vehicles.
