      Car driven by cop rams into three pedestrians in Nariman Point, leaving one dead

      In an unfortunate incident over the weekend involved a car driven by a 49 year old constable, Mangesh Laxman Chavan , attached to Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 1, that has left two critically injured and one dead at Nariman Point. As per sources, the cop lost control of the vehicle and hit the three pedestrians before coming to a halt after hitting a tree. The accident occurred near the Inox theater in Nariman Point.

      The victims in the accident have been identified as Mohammad Shahgir Ansari, Sajid Jamaluddin Sayyed, and a 10-year-old boy named Sunil Hiralal Jaiswal. Bystanders helped to rush the injured to St. George hospital, where Mohammad Shahgir Ansari was declared brought dead, whereas the other two have been recuperating at the hospital. Hiralal Jaiswal, father of the injured boy, while speaking to Mumbai Mirror said, “There are several roadside stalls with various games here that attract a crowd, including many children, on weekends. Chavan was attempting a right turn, but ended up taking a U-turn and hitting people. He tried to flee from the spot, but was nabbed by passersby and handed over to the police.” Trying to recollect what happened, Sunil, the injured boy said, “I was with playing with a child when the car hit me from behind. Though my leg was hurt I panicked and tried to run from the spot. My father who was there brought me to the hospital and I was told I had suffered a fracture.”

      Speaking more on the occasion, ACP Rajendra Chauhan, Marine Drive police station, said to Mid Day, “A case has been registered against Chavan under Sections 279 (rash negligence driving), 304A (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court on Sunday and granted bail. The injured are in critical condition and recuperating in the hospital. We are investigating the matter.”
