Buick, the premium automobile brand of General Motors, has lined up its new compact crossover model for the Detroit Auto Show in January 2012, as confirmed by the company on Wednesday, 7th December 2011.
The car marker abstained from divulging any specific information about the new crossover. However, various sources have revealed that the new Buick crossover is expected to be built on GM's front-wheel-drive Gamma subcompact platform, which also supports models like the Chevrolet Sonic and the Opel Meriva, a compact Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV).
The new compact crossover model from Buick is expected to be named as Encore and will roll out into showrooms as a 2013 model. GM spokesperson, Stephanie Rice said, “The wraps will be taken off the global Buick crossover at a press conference on January 10, during the media days.”
Along with the new compact crossover from Buick, General Motors also has plans for three other global launches at the Detroit Auto Show. The new models will include two Chevrolet concept vehicles and rear-wheel drive Cadillac ATS.
During 2009, General Motors, in an attempt to resurrect its market standing after recovering from bankruptcy in July, announced a two-year product plan which included plans for a new compact Buick crossover.
Buick, the premium car brand from General Motors, is the oldest American auto company and its models are popular in auto markets of United States, Mexico, China, Taiwan and Israel. Though its sales in the American car market dropped around 7% in November, it still witnessed an overall boost of 18% this year, with 162,659 units being sold. In America, Buick is the third largest brand of GM in terms of volume, next to Chevrolet and GMC and ahead of Cadillac.
With the launch of its new compact Buick crossover, which will join the league of its full-sized predecessor Buick Enclave, GM aims to strengthen the foothold of its Buick models.
