Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is no longer the fastest super car in the world and has its title renounced by Guinness World Records. The Veyron Super Sport achieved a stop speed of 431.072 kmph three years ago in 2010, for which it held the world record for being fastest production car. However, the move by Guinness World Records is reported to have been based on John Hennessey’s recent claims.
As per reports, John Hennessey, from the Houston-based Hennessey Performance Engineering sports car tuning house, pointed out that 30 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport models sold as the world’s fastest production cars actually came with speed limiters. Further, the installed speed limiters were set to get activated on their own at 414 kmph. Therefore, those super car models would never be able to reach the company claimed world record speed of 431 kmph. This caught the attention of Guinness World Records and the group stripped the Bugatti Veyron off its title.
The Guinness World Records rules for the fastest production car require that the models sold to customers must be identical to the one that had set speed record. Evidently, due to speed limiters the Veyron Super Sport sold to buyers is different than the one used to reach the world record speed of 431.072 kmph. Hence, the super car is no longer the world’s fastest car and the title automatically goes back to the SSC Ultimate Aero with recorded top speed of 411.1 kmph.
Informing about this episode, Guinness World Records in a statement said, “It has come to the attention of Guinness World Records that there was an oversight in its adjudication of the ‘Fastest production car’ which was set in 2010 by the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. As the car’s speed limiter was deactivated, this modification was against the official guidelines. Consequently, the vehicle’s record set at 431.072 kmph is no longer valid. Following this, Guinness World Records is reviewing this category with expert external consultants to ensure our records fairly reflect achievements in this field.”
On getting stripped off its world record title by Guinness World Records, Bugatti quoted, “Guinness knew the Veyron’s speed limiter was deactivated but that for safety reasons, cars subsequently sold to customers would have their speed limiters activated (set at 414 kmph). It’s not a hard blow if we lose this title. The Super Sport is more than just a world record car.”
