Iconic German car manufacturer, BMW, has launched its much anticipated next-generation Z4 model. While the base variant has a price of Rs. 68.9 lakh, the DPT (Design Pure Traction) variant is placed at 69.9 lakh (all figures are ex-showroom, India). The company has insisted on keeping two variants of Z4 in India while keeping the engine configurations on both trims same. The car that was unveiled in December 2012 for the global markets, now features in product line-up of BMW India.

Philipp von Sahr, President of BMW Group India, was quoted as saying “The new BMW Z4 embodied the excitement of dynamism and aesthetics in a more uncompromising style than ever before. It represents a time-honoured and yet alluringly contemporary interpretation of the traditional roadster concept. The classical proportions and unmistakable athletic character, armed with a raft of design and equipment innovations, bring more excitement to the new BMW Z4.”

It must be mentioned that the changes given in Z4 are cosmetic in nature as the company has not altered mechanics of the car. The minor changes include LED daytime running lights in the headlights that add a bit of premium feel to the car. Also to mention, the front fascia now holds a restructured bumper along with chrome slats in the grille. The car of BMW also gets sharper side lines as compared to the outgoing version and newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels. Apart from these changes, the turn indicators of Z4 are now provided behind the front wheels. BMW Z4 is now available in 11 body colours that include the new Mineral Grey Metallic, Glacier Silver Metallic and Valencia Orange Metallic, which is only available with the Hyper Orange package.

BMW has offered Z4 in two variants, namely, sDrive35i and sDrive35i Design Pure Traction. The engine given in both variants is same with the 3.0-litre straight-six petrol unit that gives away 306 bhp of power while attaining 400 Nm of torque. The engine of the car is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission system, which further transfers power to the rear wheels. A thing to note here is that engine also used to power the outgoing version of Z4.

Talking about the changes made in the interiors of Z4, it gets gloss surrounds for the central air-conditioning vents. The company has also given an optional folding central display for the iDrive system. New trim options include an Fineline Anthracite wood finish called Kansas leather trim by BMW. Besides all these options, buyers can take the optional M Sport package in which Adaptive M suspension, 18-inch M alloy wheels and an M aerodynamics package are offered. Also under this package, sportier seats and M leather steering wheel are also given by the company.

It must be noted that the launch of updated Z4 is fourth for the luxury car maker in 2013. The newly launched car of BMW will be brought to India through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route. In terms of competition, 2014 Z4 would compete against the likes of Mercedes-Benz SLK and Porsche Boxster. According to industry experts, BMW has been quite late in updating Z4 as its rivals had launched the facelift versions of their cars a while ago in India. Although, the updates given in Z4 are quite minor if one takes into account the changes given in rival cars, the car of BMW still retains enough fire-power.
