BMW India, a fully owned subsidiary of Germany based BMW group, is all set to launch its much anticipated starting range sports utility vehicle (SUV) – BMW X1 – in the Indian market on 23rd of December, 2010. The new BMW X1 model would be carrying both diesel and petrol versions along with both manual and automatic transmission options. After its launch in the country, the BMW X1 will be the lowest priced car in company’s portfolio in the country as the car is expected to be shelved in the price segment of sub Rs 20 lakh. The BMW X1 will be fighting for space with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Honda CR-V, Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Captiva and Mitsubishi Outlander.

The new X1 model will be assembled at company’s Chennai plant following its import in India through CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit route. It has been speculated by the industry sources that BMW may decide to manufacture the X1 model in India itself after analyzing the initial response of the Indian buyers for the car.

The car would be launched in two variants including X1 Corporate Edition and X1 Highline. Where the petrol version of this car will be launched sporting a 1.8L engine, the diesel version would be powered by a 2.0L diesel engine. The launch of X1 will further enhance its existing strong luxury SUV line-up including BMW X3, X5 and X6.

Meanwhile, BMW India has snatched the top luxury car maker’s position from Mercedes Benz in the country. In the period of Jan to Nov 2010, the company sold a total of 5,345 units of its cars as compared to the 5,109 cars sold by Mercedes Benz India in the same period. BMW India had sold 3,337 units in the first 11 months of last year. The company plans to invest as much as Rs 70 crore in its India operations by year 2012.
